How-To Make a Marquee Graduation Cake

What You’ll Need

  • 4 Cupcakes
  • 9" x 13" Sheet Cake
  • 4 Cups White Icing
  • Marquee Graduation DecoSet®
  • Teal Green Premium Gel Color
  • 2 lbs White Fondant
  • Red Fondant DecoSheets®
  • Black Fondant DecoShapes® Strips
  • Yellow Fondant DecoSheets®
  • White Fondant DecoShapes® Dots
  • Piping Decorating Tip #4
  • Cake Icer Decorating Tip #790
  • XL Piping Decorating Tip #807
  • Standard Plastic Coupler Without Notch

  • Step 1

    Bake a 9" x 13" rectangle cake and 4 cupcakes. Allow to fully cool.

  • Step 2

    Trimming cake

    Make angled cuts on the sides of the cake, cutting 2” from the base of the left side and 1” from the base of the right. Place cake on a Silver Half Sheet Cake Board.

  • Step 3

    Icing a cake

    Using Cake Icer Decorating Tip #790 and white icing, apply a crumb coat.

     

  • Step 4

    Mix 2 lbs of white fondant with 1 tsp of Teal Green Premium Gel Color. 

  • Step 5

    Rolling out fondant

    Roll out teal green fondant to 1/8" thick.

    Tip: Powdered sugar can be used to prevent the fondant from sticking.

  • Step 6

    cover cake in fondant

    Place fondant on cake. Smooth and trim excess fondant.

  • Step 7

    Adhere fondant to cake board

    Using Red Fondant DecoSheets®, cut out an arrow and adhere to cake board.

  • Step 8

    Cutting fondant

    Using Red Fondant DecoSheets®, cut out desired numbers.

    Tip: If the metal cutters hurt your hands, place a hard surface (like a plastic icing scraper) between your hands and the cutter. 

  • Step 9

    Cutting fondant

    Using Yellow Fondant DecoSheets®, cut out a star.

  • Step 10

    Adding fondant to cake

    Use Black Fondant DecoShapes® Strips to create a frame on top of the cake. Trim corners to be rounded and adhere the strips to the cake with white icing.

  • Step 11

    Icing cupcakes

    Ice cupcakes using XL Piping Decorating Tip #807 and white icing.

    Add a dollop of icing to the bottom of each cupcake to adhere them to the cake board.

  • Step 12

    Attaching fondant to cake

    Add small White Fondant DecoShapes® Dots on top of the black fondant strips. Adhere with white icing. 

  • Step 13

    Adding fondant dots

    Place medium White Fondant DecoShapes® Dots on top of the red arrow.

  • Step 14

    Adding fondant to cupcakes

    Add red numbers to the top of cupcakes.

    Tip: Decorate extra cupcakes with a Custom Photo PhotoCake® Edible Cake Image of your grad. 

  • Step 15

    Adding decorations to cake

    Add Marquee Graduation DecoSet® to the top of the cake.

  • Step 16

    Adding fondant to cake

    Add yellow star to the cake.
