Base ice a double layer 8” round cake with a thin layer of white icing.
Mix fondant. Mix 1 1/2 lbs. of fondant with Royal Blue Premium Gel Color. Leave some of the marbling of the fondant for effect. Cover the cake, smooth, trim excess.
Tip: Apply the fondant with a firm, gentle smoothing action. A vertical pinhole can rid you of any air bubbles trapped underneath.
Make the life preserver. Roll white fondant into ½” diameter rope. Cut to a 4 ½”L length. Dab water on one end and adhere the ends together to form the life preserver. Mix Red Red Premium Gel Color with a small amount of fondant and roll out thin. Cut ½”W x 1 ½”L strips with a Ribbon Cutter. Adhere to the strips to the life preserver with a dab of water and set aside to let dry.
Create a fence. With Piping Tip #2, pipe two white lines on the sides at varying intervals of the cake forming wires for a fence. Then, from White Fondant DecoSheets® cut 1/2”W strips with a Fondant Cutter. (If using regular fondant, you will need to set regular fondant aside to firm before the next steps). Cut 12-16 strips at varying lengths. Snip the ends of the fondant with a scissors to create a point, like the top of a fence post.
Pipe a stripe of white icing using Piping Tip #3 down the back side of a fence points and place on the side of the cake over the icing “wires.”
With Piping Tip #2, pipe squiggles all the way around the bottom of the cake.
Sprinkle brown sugar on the top and around the sides of the cake to look like sand.
With the remaining Red Fondant, roll out a ¼” to ½” thick piece. Using a small Flower Cutter, cut out a starfish shape. With a toothpick, poke dots onto the top of the starfish for texture. Adhere to base of cake by anchoring in the white icing.
Place the Beach Chair DecoSet® Cake Topper components on the cake and adhere the life preserver with a dab of water on the edge.
