Planning Your Graduation Party

04.22.10 0

The day that your child graduates from high school or college is one of the most exciting events in yours and your child’s life. Planning the graduation party can seem like a daunting task since you know that you have to invite almost everyone who has been involved in your child’s life. So you have to consider invitations, decorations, food and cake, location….the list goes on. Here are a few simple ideas for keeping throwing a great graduation party without breaking the bank.

1. Set a location
If you have enough room at your place try to have it there. Since most graduation happen in the end of May, early June plan for outdoors so that you keep the mess out of the house.

Remember, most people mingle in and out of graduation parties so they are not all there at once. If you have a garage, and even a small amount of lawn for a few picnic tables that will be sufficient.

If you don’t have enough space for at least 100 people to mingle in and out of for a few hours, try a local park that has a pavilion area. Make sure you contact the local parks director for any prohibited times, food, and if you have to pay for rental.

If you want to enjoy the day as much as your grad, then you can rent a hall or make restaurant reservations – the caterers will take care of most everything else, although you may want to bring the decorating ideas.

2. Cook or cater?
If you have a large family or lots of friends that can help out with cooking or even bringing potluck items can be a huge money saver and will help save your sanity.

If you think you’d like to do some of the cooking, salads and other side items, try a combination of cooking and catering. This can be a great way to reduce your stress since the caterer can take care of the main dish items.

The item that you can truly specialize for your grad is the cake. There are several options to choose from to personalize your graduation cake for a varsity sports grad, music, and more.

3. Entertainment?
This is more of a personal choice and depends on where the party is. Some graduation parties have DJ’s and bands, but don’t think of it as necessary. Most people aren’t expecting entertainment anyway since they come, the give a card, they eat and mingle, and go on to the next 100 graduation parties they were invited too. So don’t sweat it if you don’t have too.

4. Decorations
Choose décor based on the school colors of the graduate as well as what they were involved in at school. For example, if they were an honor student and the school colors were black and orange you can find black and orange book confetti, banners, and more. You can get lots of ideas from your local party store as well. There is no limit to how creative you can be either. Have your child get involved as well with a scrapbook or video to show during the party.

5. Don’t forget to enjoy the day too!
You worked hard on getting your child to graduate, be sure to enjoy yourself and give yourself a pat on the back too!
